Goldenseal  (Hydrastis Canadiensis), also known as Yellow root, Orange root, Ground raspberry, Puccoon or Wild curcuma is a medicinal and perennial type of herb that comes from the Buttercup family and can be found in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. Goldenseal is thick in appearance and has a yellow knotted rootstick and large leaves that are round. Above ground the stem is a purplish color and hairy while below ground it is yellow in color. The flowers of the goldenseal plant blossom in late spring and then in the summer single berry which resembles a large raspberry appears and it brings with it 10 to 30 seeds.

 

Goldenseal is very close to another herb, Echinacea when it comes to its medicinal properties. Goldenseal supports the immune system in strengthening the cells that are needed to fight off bacteria, viruses and any number of fungi. Goldenseal is used in many ways as a type of antibiotic. This herb is excellent when it comes to healing, and it has been known to help with digestion and to fight off bladder infections. Goldenseal can also be used as a type of laxative and is excellent for treat a variety of types of inflammation. Goldenseal can be added to water in small quantities and then be used to soothe eyes that are red and sore from lack of Sleep or overwork. Goldenseal as an herbal Tincture can be used as a gargle or a form of mouthwash for a sore throat or for sores in the mouth such as canker sores. Goldenseal can also be brewed as a tea and used for this purpose. In order to do this boil 0.5 grams to one gram of goldenseal in a cup of water. 

 

Goldenseal is a type of bitter that encourages the secretion and flow of bile and is readily used as an expectorant. As previously expected, Goldenseal fights a variety of types of bacteria, fungi and yeast, examples of these being Candida and E.Coli. Goldenseal can be taken to help fight infections of the mucus membranes such as the mouth, throat, sinuses, stomach, intestines, Vagina and urinary tract.

 

Typically a dosage of Goldenseal amounts to 250 milligrams to 500 milligrams on a daily basis. Applied directly to the skin in the form of creams and ointments, Goldenseal can help to heal wounds of the skin and can also fight Fungal Infections.
