Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus (from the Greek root word which means “well covered”) is a group of shrubs and trees which are to be found growing in plentiful supply in Australia. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globules) is a member of the clove family.  There is an estimated seven hundred or more species of Eucalyptus. Although it is native to Australia, Eucalyptus can also be found in lesser degrees in Indonesia, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands.

Eucalyptus has been used for many purposes over the years. Eucalyptus oil is made from the leaves of the tree. It is steam distilled by way of the leaves and then can be used for cleaning and deodorizing. In small quantities the oil is placed in food supplements such as decongestants, Cough drops and sweets. Eucalyptus oil is effective for fighting off insects and is an active ingredient in a vast number of mosquito repellents.

Eucalyptus has Antiseptic properties that make it beneficial to help to get rid of sore throats and to reduce the duration and severity of colds and the Flu. The oil of Eucalyptus is a key ingredient in the product Vicks Vapor Rub as it is effective in clearing nasal passages, loosening phlegm, decreasing Fever and acting as a remedy for a variety of infections. Eucalyptus is also very good at encouraging blood flow to the muscles.

Eucalyptus is recommended for use in the case of a chest infection as it is a power expectorant and is especially worthwhile in fighting serious chest infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis. In its diluted form, Eucalyptus oil can be applied topically to the skin as a sinus or chest rub and will have a warming effect on the area.
