Astralagus is a plant that has been used for medicinal purposes in China for many centuries. Astralagus is native to the temperate areas of the Northern Hemisphere. A common name for astralagus is Huang qi, which stands for “yellow leader.” It is the root of the astralagus plant that is used for its healing properties. More specifically it is the four to seven-year-old dried root of the astralagus plant that is used and then harvested in the springtime. There are an estimated 2,000 varieties of astralagus across the globe but it is the kind that makes its home in Northern China that has been the most extensively tested. These tests have included chemical tests as well as pharmacological tests.

 

Astralagus is rich in many substances that make it a beneficial herb for humans. These substances include amino acids, flavonoids, isoflavones, polysaccharides, saponins, trace minerals and triterpene glycosides.

 

Astralagus is widely used in Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM) for a number of different health concerns, such as night sweats, Diarrhea and the lack of vital energy. Other problems that TCM claims astralagus helps include cardiovascular disease, Diabetes, Edema, weakness, respiratory infections, and high Blood pressure.

 

Medical journals cite studies that suggest that this herb has anti-viral properties and helps to stimulate the immune system to help the body fight off illnesses such as the Flu and the common cold. Astralagus is also believed to inhibit the spread as well as the development of different types of Cancer cells.

 

Astralagus has been used for a variety of other health problems such as the common cold and sore throats, a variety of infections, heart attacks, hepatitis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

 

 Other possible benefits of astralagus include helping to fight viral and Bacterial Infections; improving appetite and digestion and regulating levels of blood sugar in the body. Astralagus is also believed to be useful for patients who are presently undergoing radiation treatment or chemotherapy.
