Measles is a highly contagious viral infection. It is also called rubeola or red measles. The disease is extremely rare in the United States because of widespread immunization programs.
Symptoms
• high Fever
• distinct red rash
• Diarrhea
• cold
• watering of the eyes
• dry Cough
When adults get the disease, they usually have more severe symptoms than children who get the disease.
The incubation period—the time between when you are first exposed to the measles virus and when you develop symptoms—is usually about 8 to 12 days, although it can range between 7 to 18 days. People who are infected with the virus can pass it to others for about 4 days before they get a rash. They can continue to transmit the virus for about 4 more days after the rash first appears.
Causes
Measles is caused by a paramyxovirus. This group of viruses generally causes respiratory infections.
Measles is transmitted when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus is most often spread when people first become ill—before they know they have the disease. A person is contagious from about 4 days before the rash breaks out to 4 days after the rash appears.
Treatment
Orange
Oranges are very valuable in measles, as the digestive power of the body is seriously hampered. The patient suffers from intense toxemia, and the lack of saliva coats his tongue and often destroys his thirst for water as well as his desire for food. The agreeable flavor of orange juice helps greatly in overcoming these drawbacks. Orange juice is the ideal liquid food for this disease.
Lemon Juice
The juice of lemon also makes an effective thirst-quenching drink in measles. About 15 to 25 ml of lemon juice, diluted with water, should be taken for this purpose.
Turmeric
Turmeric is beneficial in the treatment of measles. Raw roots of turmeric should be dried in the sun and ground to a fine powder. Half a teaspoon of this powder, mixed with a few drops of Honey and the juice of a few bitter gourd leaves, should be given to patients suffering from measles.
Liquorice
Powdered liquorice has been found valuable in relieving the Cough, which is typical in measles. The child patient should be given half a teaspoon of powdered liquorice mixed with the same quantity of Honey.
Barley
The use of barley water has proved beneficial for the troublesome Cough in measles. This water should be taken frequently, sweetened with the newly-drawn oil of sweet almonds.
Egg Plant Seeds
The seeds of the egg plant are a stimulant. Intake of half to one gram of these seeds daily for three days will help develop Immunity against measles for one year.
