Alum Root is native to North America and grows in late spring to about two feet tall. Alum Root was used by Native Americans because of its strong astringent peoperties, due to its high tannin content. Alum Root is thought to reduce inflammation of mucous membranes, curb irritation of hemorrhoidal tissue and to restore venous health. Alum Root is a powerful astringent for passive bleeding, as occurs in hematuria, hemotysis and menorrhagia. Alum Root has healing effects on the entire gastrointestinal tract. Alum Root has been used to treat other conditions such as tuberculosis bacteria, diarrhea, dysentery and leukorrhea, among others.
